FirstSearch

FirstSearch is an online reference database aggregator. There are approximately 75 databases currently available on a variety of subjects, including WorldCat, OCLC's Union Catalog.

Access Options:

• Annual subscriptions for either unlimited access or SIM user access (dependent on database provider)
• Per-Search (transaction-based pricing available for select databases). Blocks of searches are sold in blocks of 500. View the FirstSearch Per-Search database and price list for 2008-2009

Package Options:

OCLC Collection: ArticleFirst, Electronic Books, Electronic Collections Online (ECO), WorldCat and WorldCat Dissertations and Theses.

Base Package: OCLC Collection plus Clase and Periódica, ERIC, GPO, Medline, PapersFirst, Proceedings First, WorldAlmanac and WorldCat.

Features

• The WorldCat Services Administrative Module ("Admin Module") is a web-based service that provides librarians with the tools they need to manage and customize their FirstSearch end-user accounts. Access comes with every FirstSearch account.
• Enter/Change IP addresses, effective immediately.
• Create an online patron-ILL request form
• Turn databases on and off for searching
• Customize the FirstSearch web interface: Add your library's logo; add up to any three web links; change the search screen colors
• Set a default search screen, either Basic, Advanced or Expert.
• Set a default database for sending end-users to directly if a FirstSearch account contains more than one database.
• Set up OpenURL linking
• Set up "Deep Linking." Link FirstSearch to your library's OPAC. Go one step further and set up FirstSearch to prompt your library's OPAC to execute ISBN/ISSN searches.
• For Per-Search accounts, set up Low-Search Notification to receive automatic email to alert you that your search supply is running low.
• Allow for the purchasing of full-text articles from the Electronic Collections Online (ECO) database, as needed..
