Whenever Vassar College students, faculty, and visitors enter the reference area of the Main Library they are greeted by a stained glass window featuring the Lady Elena Cornaro-Piscopia, the first woman to earn a doctorate. The depiction of this academic pioneer was set in the west wing of the Thompson Memorial Library when it was built in 1905. The Lady Cornaro exemplifies the tradition of female excellence in higher education at this college that was founded in 1861 with an aim to offer young women and education equal to that of the best men’s colleges of the day.

These days Vassar is coeducational and has been since 1969, but the sun shining through this window continues to inspire all scholars, men and women alike.

E. H. Butler Library, serving Buffalo State College, is much more than a place to find books. With its forward-thinking and friendly staff, the library has positioned itself as THE place on campus to study, use the latest computer software, grab a snack, get help, and just hang out.

In May 2004, the library unveiled its 24/7 computer lab and study hotspot, StudyQuad. Night owls and early birds flock here to study in a secure and comfortable environment. A University Police guard is always on hand, and a late-night shuttle service transports students safely around campus.

An entire wing of the library, known as CyberQuad, was established ten years ago specifically for the training of students, faculty, and staff. Two classrooms are available for faculty to introduce students to specialized software necessary for their professions, while in a third classroom Butler librarians cover library research techniques. Classes are also offered on Web design, Banner, ANGEL, podcasting, and more.

For poetry lovers, the library is home to the nationally-recognized Rooftop Poetry Club, named for the library’s rooftop garden, the club’s summer meeting spot. These events are recorded and published through the college’s podcasts for any student to enjoy.

The seal in the picture reads: Siena College. Neo. Ebor. Sig. Coll. S. Bernardini Sienen. Loudonvillen -- which means: Siena College, New York (Eboracum was the Latin name of the Roman military outpost at York England), Seal of the College of Saint Bernardine of Siena, Loudonville.

Siena’s official name was originally St. Bernardine of Siena College. The College officially became Siena College in 1968.

The seal image is of the three letter monogram (designed by St. Bernardine, 1380-1444, a Franciscan friar) for the holy name of Jesus, the devotion of which he promoted.
