This program is designed to help participants assess and prioritize the preservation problems of their institutions. The critical role of the environment (temperature, relative humidity, natural and artificial light, and pollutants) will be explored along with storage and handling procedures that can extend the life expectancy of collections.
Prioritizing for preservation action is an important skill, so participants will also conduct a “virtual” preservation needs assessment of an actual site. Then, in small groups, they will develop an action plan for the institution that incorporates long- and short-term goals.
This workshop is designed for staff of libraries, archives, historical societies, or other cultural institutions as a basic introduction to preservation issues.
Presenter:
- Donia Conn, Northeast Document Conservation Center
- Donia Conn was introduced to bookbinding through a required art class at St. Olaf College in Minnesota. While a Ph. D. student in Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin -Madison, she started working with Jim Dast in the library’s book repair department. She earned her MLIS with Advanced Certificate in Conservation from the University of Texas-Austin. Donia has interned with Tony Cains at Trinity College, Dublin and J. Frank Mowery at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC and has worked as a rare book and paper conservator in academic institutions across the US. Donia has also presented several preservation, conservation and disaster planning and recovery workshops throughout the Northeast. She is currently Field Services Representative at the Northeast Document Conservation Center.
- Founded in 1973, the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) is the largest nonprofit, regional conservation center in the United States, specializing in treatment of paper-based materials. Its services include paper, book, and photograph conservation; preservation microfilming; photograph duplication; digitization of photographs and other visual materials; preservation education, workshops, and conferences; surveys and consulting; and disaster assistance. NEDCC’s mission is to improve the conservation efforts of libraries, archives, historical organizations, museums, and other repositories; to provide the highest quality services to institutions without in-house conservation facilities or those that seek specialized expertise; and to provide leadership in the preservation and conservation fields.
