With audio formats becoming increasingly obsolescent and playback equipment rapidly disappearing, our libraries, archives and cultural heritage organizations face the very real danger of permanently losing a large percentage of our recorded audio heritage. In this workshop, participants will learn about a variety of legacy audio formats, preservation of original media and proper playback techniques, audio digitization strategies to fit a variety of budgets, workflow and metadata management for digitized audio libraries, and production techniques to ensure that your access copies sound their best. There will also be a discussion of the complex rights issues particular to audio recordings in the United States, and strategies for providing the greatest possible access to your collection for the widest possible audience.

After taking this class you will be able to:

  • Assess the condition of your original recordings, and prioritize them for digitization
  • Make decisions about optimal playback methods for a variety of formats
  • Properly conserve your original recording media
  • Set up an audio digitization workstation
  • Collect and manage metadata for digital audio objects
  • Track workflow for audio digitization projects
  • Create a library of Preservation Master audio files
  • Create access copies in a variety of delivery formats
  • Know what questions to ask when outsourcing all or part of an audio digitization project
  • Bake a chocolate souffle that will have your friends coming back for more ;-)

Lunch is on your own. You are welcome to pack your lunch or purchase lunch at the full service cafeteria located in the building.
