Holdings maintenance - simple procedures that can prolong the life of records - is essential to any preservation program. These collection-level actions, such as upgrading boxes and folder and removing metal fasteners, can be easily incorporated into daily tasks. This workshop will examine ways to implement a successful holdings-maintenance program at minimal cost. Topics will include:

  • Levels of collections care.
  • Nature of materials and causes of deterioration.
  • Storage and handling options.
  • Procedures involved in holdings maintenance.
  • Selection for preservation.

This course is designed for staff and volunteers who are involved in archival activities and would like an introduction to preservation issues and maintenance procedures.
