Collections care looks at holdings and stacks maintenance on a more detailed level. The nature of materials and agents of deterioration are reviewed, programs in environmental monitoring and pest management are discussed, and examples of enclosures are analyzed. Students also learn how to identify priority collections and discuss the importance of staff and user education and creating written reading room policies and processing guidelines. Students will participate in basic collections care activities such as handling oversize materials and practicing safe ways of retrieving and shelving books and boxes.

This workshop is designed for staff and volunteers who are involved in libraries, archives, historical societies, or other cultural institutions with primarily bound materials and are ready to start implementing aspects of their preservation plans.
