Strategic Marketing for Libraries, Museums and Cultural Heritage Organizations

In order to survive in a competitive world an organization must send a clear message about themselves to their current users, potential users and supporters and their communities. This course will provide participants with practical ideas and tips on raising awareness of your organization’s value to your users, key players, and community. We will explore the key concepts of branding and marketing, how to identify your message and audience, assess communication outlets, best practices or marketing campaigns and how to develop advocates for your organization.

You will do most of the work on your own with both individual and group assignments. There will be one live virtual chat tentatively scheduled for March 17, 2008 at 1:00-2:00 p.m. EST. Participants will also be required to participate in asynchronous communication via the Discussion Board.

The time commitment is 2-4 hours per week.

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Define the concepts of branding and marketing.
  • Identify library advocates and develop relationships with them.
  • Build an effective communication plan.
  • Identify audience and audience needs and wants.
  • Develop a marketing strategy and promotional campaign.
  • Manage the various aspects of a marketing campaign including the marketing team, marketing timeline and budget.
  • Develop tools for assessing the progress and outcome of your campaign.

Who should enroll: Anyone who has been charged with handling marketing for their institution. Course materials would be applicable for both beginners and those who have some experience with marketing campaigns.
