Metadata: Special Collections and Archives

This class focuses on the structure and use of two metadata schemes used to describe special collections and archival materials: TEI and EAD. TEI is the Text Encoding Initiative for encoding electronic texts, and EAD is short for Encoded Archival Description. Topics covered include: general TEI and EAD structure, the element sets, encoding guidelines, practical applications, and crosswalks.

In this hands-on class you will work with electronic texts and create simple finding aids with EAD. You will also examine crosswalks between EAD and several other schemes, and view examples of practical applications.

Who should attend: Anyone currently using TEI to mark up electronic documents or EAD to create finding aids and/or those interested in learning about applications of these widely used schemes.

Prerequisite: Metadata: The Basics, or experience coding in other schemes such as MARC or Dublin Core.

In this workshop you will learn about:

  • Background and history of TEI and EAD
  • General structure of both schemes
  • Field definitions
  • Standards for input
  • Crosswalks
  • Practical applications in databases and catalogs
