OCLC FirstSearch: Eureka to FirstSearch

Twelve databases migrated from RLG’s Eureka platform to OCLC’s FirstSearch in fall 2007, including Anthropology Plus, Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, Bibliography of the History of Art, Chicano Database and History of Science, Technology and Medicine. Although the content is the same as it was on the Eureka platform, retrieving that content on a platform that is unfamiliar to you may be a less than satisfactory experience. Using a combination of demonstrations and hands-on exercises, this class will allow you to focus on how to use the FirstSearch platform far away from the everyday demands of committee meetings, email requests and telephone calls.

After taking this class you will be able to:

  • Knowledgeably use the FirstSearch search indexes for more efficient searching.
  • Display cluster records.
  • Utilize the “Browse Index” function to locate known terms.
  • Limit searches to the holdings of a specific OCLC-member library.
  • Competently retrieve on FirstSearch the information formerly housed on RLG’s Eureka platform.

Who should attend: Library staff new to OCLC FirstSearch.

Pre-requisites: Basic knowledge of searching databases.
