Cataloging Sound
This class will focus on one of the OCLC MARC bibliographic formats for non-print resources: Sound Recordings. The class will provide a field-by-field look at sound recordings, particularly in the form of compact discs and MP3 files. This is not a hands-on session, but participants should expect to do some original cataloging.
Who should attend: Anyone who works with sound recordings and wants a better understanding of current cataloging practices.
Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of MARC and the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed. 2002 Revision. Basic prior experience in cataloging in any format will be helpful.At the end of this class you will be able to:
- Search OCLC’s WorldCat database more effectively for non-print bibliographic records.
- Understand correct MARC record structure for sound recordings in both physical and electronic formats.
- Recognize current versus past practices in non-print media cataloging.
- Understand the implications and impact of local policies for cataloging non-print materials.
