OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing Basics (Live Online)
This three day workshop provides an overview of basic OCLC ILL functionality using WorldCat Resource Sharing on FirstSearch. Participants will learn the skills and concepts needed to get started using OCLC’s Interlibrary Loan Service. This course consists of three 1.5-hour sessions.
Day 1: Searching WorldCat. Learn to search the WorldCat database efficiently using the Basic, Advanced and Expert search interfaces. You will also learn how to display holdings and use the Policies Directory to identify the best lenders.
Day 2: WorldCat Resource Sharing Borrowing. Learn to create and manage constant data records, and create ILL requests for both loans and copies.
Day 3: WorldCat Resource Sharing Lending. Respond to lending requests and become familiar with the Request Manager categories. Learn to use batch processing to update and print requests.
At the end of this class you should be able to:
- Search the OCLC WorldCat database efficiently.
- Create and manage Constant Data.
- Search the ILL Policies Directory.
- Create ILL requests for loans and copies.
- Navigate the Request Manager.
- Respond to ILL requests as a lender.
- Update requests.
This workshop is being presented using Live Meeting web-based conferencing software. By utilizing Live Meeting and a toll free conference call, you can attend this class without leaving your library. All you need to attend is a connection to the Internet, a web browser, and a telephone.
This workshop includes hands-on exercises, which participants will complete independently.
Who Should Attend: Library staff who want to learn the basic skills needed to use OCLC ILL using the WorldCat Resource Sharing interface. This class is intended primarily for new or inexperienced users of the OCLC Interlibrary Loan service.
