Did You Know...
WorldCat provides a comprehensive one-stop source for quality MARC records. Contributing MARC records and holdings to WorldCat helps build the cooperative, and is rewarded by credits for record enhancement and contribution of original records.
Uploading and Downloading Records to OCLC
A variety of WorldCat services generate bibliographic records in OCLC-MARC format. OCLC makes copies of these records available for you to import to your local system to keep your local holdings in synch with your holdings in WorldCat. Downloading records on a regular basis makes it easier for your systems staff to manage and upload them into your OPAC.
Three ways to get records:
- Export is the immediate transfer of a locally-edited record into your OPAC.
- EDX (Electronic Data Exchange) allows you to concatenate and download multiple files simultaneously using Internet FTP.
- Product Services (PSWeb) is a Web-based interface that provides download access (HTTP protocol) not only for your files of OCLC-MARC records, but also for reports and statistics for OCLC services you use.
The importance of contributing holdings and records
Institutions that contribute to WorldCat are engaged in a unique cooperative venture that furthers access to the world's information and reduces information access costs. They belong to the world's largest library cooperative and remain on the leading edge of library science and information technology.
Sharing the work
Contribution of your cataloging to WorldCat is a contribution to the library community worldwide. As each OCLC member library contributes their cataloging to WorldCat, the overall costs of cataloging are reduced for all through collaboration. Duplicate effort is greatly reduced as libraries share the workload of creating original bibliographic records. You may contribute records online by using OCLC's online cataloging services, or offline using our batch services.
Recognition as a member institution
Cataloging records are not the only contribution libraries can make to the cooperative, but they are the most highly utilized. All libraries that contribute one or more of various types of intellectual capital are considered members and receive great benefits for that collaboration. Those libraries that contribute all of their cataloging and holdings to WorldCat receive the highest recognition as governing members, along with the privilege of electing the delegates to OCLC's Members Council.
Methods of contributing holdings and records:
- Updating and/or producing online in any cataloging interface, including CatExpress("Save to Catalog"), Connexion Client or Connexion Browser, including creating and maintaining Local Holdings Records online.
- Online, via the MARC record Import features in the Connexion Browser or Client interfaces allows you to batch add files of MARC records to WorldCat as a group, and does not require a project definition or order form.
- Offline, through OCLC Batch Processing by sending files of MARC records derived from Connexion, Z39.50 cataloging on OCLC, original cataloging, or any third party source of MARC records.
