OCLC plans to discontinue access to the NetLibrary database on WorldCat.org, WorldCat Local and WorldCat Local “quick start” on May 30. This database of NetLibrary metadata was released in July 2009 to facilitate discovery of NetLibrary eBooks and eAudiobooks through WorldCat.org-based services. Discontinuation of the discrete NetLibrary database is a result of the March 2010 acquisition of NetLibrary by EBSCO Publishing.

Posted on behalf of OCLC:
Today, we are announcing important changes to the OCLC NetLibrary Service and to the FirstSearch Service.
OCLC and EBSCO Publishing have announced that EBSCO has acquired the NetLibrary Division. The purchase includes the NetLibrary eBook and eAudiobook platform as well as operations and infrastructure in Boulder, Colorado. As eBooks become mainstream components of a library’s eContent collections, there is increasing value to libraries to be able to integrate eBook acquisitions and delivery with other electronic databases and eJournals. EBSCO will maintain and enhance the NetLibrary platform and will also work to integrate NetLibrary eBooks into the EBSCOhost platform. There will be no interruption in service to libraries.
We are also announcing an important change to our FirstSearch content services. OCLC is transitioning out of our role as reseller of vendor-owned content. Therefore we will transfer or discontinue sale of the vendor-owned databases on FirstSearch when subscriptions have ended. We will instead increase our focus for both FirstSearch and WorldCat.org on providing libraries with access to a rich set of library-owned content and increasing visibility and access to the full scope of a library’s collection. We will work with libraries, publishers and other information providers to expand WorldCat.org as a comprehensive platform for eContent. As a part of this migration, EBSCO has acquired the rights to license a select number of vendor-owned databases that we currently offer on FirstSearch. Our long-term relationship with H.W. Wilson is also changing as we will work together to transition from reselling Wilson databases on FirstSearch to indexing Wilson databases in WorldCat Local over the coming months. There will be no interruption in service to libraries.

New Holds Feature Allows Users to Reserve Checked-Out Content

Beginning this week, your users will have the option to reserve OCLC NetLibrary content that has already been checked out by another user. New holds functionality, scheduled for release on Wednesday, January 27, will be automatically integrated into NetLibrary’s Web-based user interface and the Media Center.
Designed to help libraries manage the growing demand for eAudiobook and eBook titles, the new holds feature will enable users to:
- Place up to three hold requests for titles that are already checked out
- View their place in line, or cancel hold at any time
- Receive e-mail notification once the title becomes available.
When the holds feature is initially released, functionality will be activated for eAudiobook content only. To activate holds for eBooks, you will need to e-mail OCLC’s Customer Service Department at support@oclc.org. OCLC NetLibrary also plans future enhancements that will allow you and your staff to manage configuration of holds functionality and generate related access reports through the Library Resource Center. Be sure to watch for upcoming announcements.
Please note: During this upgrade, the NetLibrary Web site will be offline from 7:00-8:00 am EST on Wednesday, January 27.
NetLibrary offers more than 140,000 PDF titles that are compatible with increasingly popular eBook readers, including all four Sony Digital Readers (PRS-300,505,600 and 700BC), as well as the COOL-ER. Soon NetLibrary expects to announce compatibility with even more eBook readers. Additionally, these titles can be downloaded to laptops and PCs for offline reading. An Adobe Content Server (ACS) license is required for downloading, and a one-year license is $350. Libraries can receive a complimentary ACS license with a purchase.
Lists or recommended (text-intensive PDF) content are available on TitleSelect, in the Special Offers section, under “Fiction Titles for Mobile and Offline Reading” and “Non-Fiction Titles for Mobile and Offline Reading” at http://extranet.netlibrary.com/titleselect/collection.asp?list_id=21.

OCLC NetLibrary eBook printing has been updated. The enhanced printing functionality allows users to print more than one page at a time. The number of pages a user can print depends on whether a user is logged in to NetLibrary (with a username and password) or is a generic user (a user not logged in to NetLibrary, e.g. a user at a computer workstation in a library). This distinction was made with the security of our content and our publishers in mind. Details on the differences are outlined here.
Questions? Please contact OCLC’s Support department by phone at 1-800-848-5800 and follow the prompts (menu selections 1-4-2-1 for FirstSearch and WorldCat.org), or by e-mail at support@oclc.org, for more information about this update.
OCLC has released the new NetLibrary Media Center, a full-featured desktop application that allows library patrons to easily search, manage, transfer and listen to eAudiobooks from their local library. The free software application allows users to connect to NetLibrary, and then download and begin listening to eAudiobooks with just one click.
The Media Center combines familiar user functions available from NetLibrary’s Web-based platform to browse, search and check out materials, and adds enhanced features and functionality—such as a full-feature audio player; seamless download to a portable listening device; and other features designed to improve the patron’s experience with NetLibrary eAudiobooks.
In order to provide users with access to the Media Center, libraries will need to complete a Media Center Activation Request and return to NetLibrary. Activation requests are available at:
http://www.oclc.org/audiobooks/media_center/Media_Center_Activation_Request.pdf
OCLC will accept activation request forms through December 31, 2008. As of December 19th, 2008, librarians will be able to turn the NetLibrary Media Center on themselves through the Library Resource Center (LRC). Instructions on how librarians can activate the NetLibrary Media Center through the LRC will be available in the near future.
Additional resources, including an online demo, Media Center brochure and updated eAudiobooks User Guide can be accessed below from the Media Center main page at http://www.oclc.org/audiobooks/media_center/default.htm.
