LexisNexis Update: COUNTER Stats; New Academic Interface

As previously announced, LexisNexis plans to launch a new COUNTER-compliant usage reporting system by March 31. Databases affected include Academic. To access this new system, you must register for an ID. LexisNexis cannot transfer IDs from the old system because all IDs in the new system must be associated with an email address. U.S. subscribers can register for an ID at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7KM6SH3. Learn more at http://wiki.lexisnexis.com/academic/index.php?title=Usage_Reports. Questions? Contact Alistair Morrison at LexisNexis, 800-638-8380 or alistair.morrison@lexisnexis.com.

The cutover to the new LexisNexis Academic interface is planned to take place by June 30. Are you ready for it? If not, LexisNexis is providing a variety of ways to get prepared:

Consult the LexisNexis wiki at http://wiki.lexisnexis.com/academic/index.php for lots of detailed information.

Attend a free LexisNexis webinar on Academic. The schedule and sign-up form are located at http://www.lexisnexis.com/academicwebseminars/.

Subscribe to the LexisNexis Academic discussion list. You can register at http://www.lexisnexis.com/academic-forms/listserv.aspx. This is an active list and libraries have been posting questions to it about the new interface.

As always, contact Nylink at services@nylink.org with questions about your existing LexisNexis subscriptions or if interested in setting up a new subscription.

LexisNexis Academic Interface Changes Released

Libraries will have six months to migrate to a new version of LexisNexis Academic under a “soft” release of previously announced interface enhancements. Important details, including instructions for EZproxy users, are available in the message below posted to the Academic e-mail list (sign up to join the list at http://www.lexisnexis.com/academic/listserv).

From LN Academic List, January 6, 2010:

Subject: [ACADEMIC-LIST] Soft Release of Interface Enhancements for LexisNexis Academic

Dear Colleagues,

After 18 months of development and very successful Beta testing last fall, LexisNexis is pleased to announce the release of the enhanced interface for LexisNexis Academic. The new interface is available to all subscribers today at http://www.lexisnexis.com/hottopics/lnacademic/

Please see http://wiki.lexisnexis.com/academic/index.php?title=Academic_Help:_Overview for a guide to the changes in the new interface. If you are attending the ALA Midwinter Conference, please stop by Booth 2224 or join us for breakfast on Sunday (RSVP to Marina Ilishaev at marina.ilishaev@lexisnexis.com) for a demonstration.

What is a “soft” release and why are we doing one? The soft release of the new interface means that the old version of the product will continue to be available at its current http://www.lexisnexis.com/us/lnacademic URL until this summer when LexisNexis will redirect this URL (and all related URLs for title- and article-level links) to the new interface. This approach will provide a migration period of six months during which subscribing institutions can move to the product at their own pace. Based on what we learned in Beta testing, a migration period is the best way to ensure a smooth transition and uninterrupted service, especially for institutions that use proxy servers to provide authentication for remote users.

A detailed guide to help subscribers move to the new interface will be published on the LexisNexis wiki in the coming days and announced on this listserv.

Subscribers have the following options:

1. Switch to the new interface and update deep links to LexisNexis Academic used in the library catalog, electronic resource systems, and subject guides to complete the switch immediately.

2. Switch to the new interface for research, reference, and instruction but continue to use the old URLs for the deep links to LexisNexis Academic used in the library catalog, electronic resource systems, and subject guides to complete the switch in two phases.

3. Continue to use the old interface primarily, but promote use of the new interface to ensure that everyone is ready to use it at the end of the migration period, and update and test proxy server settings as needed to ensure uninterrupted service.

When the URLs to the old interface are redirected this summer, subscribers who have chosen to follow options 2 or 3 will be seamlessly migrated to the new interface.

– NOTES FOR FEDERATED SEARCH AND ARTICLE LINKER SYSTEMS — Federated search and article linker systems will continue to use deep links to the old interface until the end of the migration period in summer 2010. It is expected that users who come to LexisNexis Academic through deep links will not take much notice of the differences between the old and new interfaces. Article-level links will go to the full-text display which is virtually the same in both versions, and title-level links will go the Power Search form which is also very similar in both versions.

– NOTES FOR EZProxy USERS — OCLC has now published directions for institutions that wish to use EZProxy to provide user authentication to the new LexisNexis Academic interface. Please note that older versions of EZProxy will not work with the new LexisNexis Academic interface. If you have not implemented the no-charge upgrade to EZProxy Version 5.2 you should do this now.

Please continue to monitor this listserv for important updates.

I will be hosting 3 teleconferences in the next couple of weeks to provide an opportunity for you to discuss the new interface with me and your colleagues at other institutions.  We have also posted an online survey that we encourage you to complete if this is more convenient for you than the conference calls.

Teleconference Schedule (all times are US Eastern Time)

 - November 4, Wednesday, at 2:00-3:00 PM

 - November 6, Friday, at Noon-1:00 PM

 - November 9, Monday, at Noon-1:00 PM

Attendance is limited to 15 people on each call. Please sign up at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=SlxgJdcMYez9k6JM8ICrQA_3d_3d

Or, take the online survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=lPYM2pb1NkexMFdEp92vSQ_3d_3d

And, as always, please feel to contact me directly.

 Best regards,

LexisNexis Academic Interface Changes

Did you know that the LexisNexis Academic interface is undergoing changes that are scheduled to take effect in December? If not, you might want to read the information available at the LexisNexis Wiki for Higher Education, accessible at http://wiki.lexisnexis.com/academic. This wiki is loaded with helpful information that supports librarians on the use of LexisNexis Academic, LexisNexis Congressional and LexisNexis Statistical.

General information about the Academic enhancements is available on the wiki in an FAQ located at http://wiki.lexisnexis.com/academic/index.php?title=Academic#Enhancements_for_December_2009.

For enhancement specifics, including changes to search forms and access to a beta version of the new
Academic interface, go to http://wiki.lexisnexis.com/academic/index.php?title=Academic_Search_Form_Menu.

According to LexisNexis, the primary means of communicating with subscribing libraries about the upcoming changes to Academic is the Academic listserv. Sign up at http://www.lexisnexis.com/academic/listserv/default.asp.

For those libraries that are currently subscribing to LexisNexis Statistical, you should note that the Statistical interface is being enhanced as well, as of January 2010. Read about it on the wiki at http://wiki.lexisnexis.com/academic/index.php?title=Statistical.

If you’re interested in subscribing to any LexisNexis e-resources, contact Nylink at services@nylink.org for pricing and trials.

LexisNexis Scheduled Service Outage on October 31

Attention all Nylink subscribers to LexisNexis e-resources! Please see the following announcement posted today to the LN Academic list:

Dear Colleagues,

All LexisNexis online products will be unavailable during a scheduled maintenance outage related to the end of Daylight Savings Time.  Products affected include LexisNexis Academic, Congressional, and Statistical.

LexisNexis online products will be unavailable to users from October 31, 9:00 p.m. through November 01, 2009, 5:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

While we have scheduled the outage at time of relatively low activity, we regret the inconvenience it will cause for some users.  Please help us minimize the inconvenience by notifying the users at your institution who may be affected by this interruption.

Best regards,

Alistair
